Feb 12, Posts: I had no problems at all fitting the Alpha to the KX – there is ample clearance, and plenty of space around the holes for fitting the standoffs. Installation of the board was a nightmare. This makes installing a heatsink such as the Alpha PAL very difficult indeed – extreme care must be taken to ensure you don’t damage the tracks on the rear of the board, of crush the components on the top of the board. Firstly the Northbridge fan is different – it’s not the standard ABIT black fan, but a much nicer looking crystal-orb like fan. Also worth noting is that on the picture of the board on the ABIT website, there is a two digit LCD display system, similar to that found on Epox boards. I later discovered this was because the board did not have the correct BIOS.

It doesn’t have a FSB jumper on the board. This makes installing a heatsink such as the Alpha PAL very difficult indeed – extreme care must be taken to ensure you don’t damage the tracks on the rear of the board, of crush the components on the top of the board.
JohnMcboy Ars Praetorian Tribus: I can only assume this was avit an obscure fault – which happens from time to time so it isn’t anything to worry about.
Once it was all in the case, the problems started. Jul 26, Qbit If that’s the case, I’m not prepared to do anything like that just yet.

Firstly the Northbridge fan is different – it’s ablt the standard ABIT black fan, but a much nicer looking crystal-orb like fan. You’ve got 4 memory slots, which to start with looks like a good feature but when you consider that for use of all 4 slots the board only supports Registered PC, it looks a little less inviting.

The board also features the same 4 memory slot arrangement, and the restrictions for PC are the same – registered only if you want to use all 4 slots with PC, or 3 slots with PC I’m doing this with a minimal setup, board, cpu, memory and video card only When I first power up the machine and it has a clear CMOS everthing is happy. It looks to be something to do with the FSB of the chip its not broken, hpg jsut not been set rightit should be at Mhz, but it is at Mhz.
The ATX power connector is the standard type, and has been placed right at the top of the board – this is a welcome feature, as the ATX power cable will not obstruct the heatsink fan in this position. Like all ABIT boards I’ve had, kc7 board features 6 PCI slots – a very welcome addition because there are no worries about using up all the slots, and it also avit you to place quite a few cards and still leave gaps between the graphics card and your PCI cards to ensure good airflow.
The IDE and Floppy connectors were also smartly placed, allowing easy installation of drives once the board has been installed into your PC.
Mon Sep 09, 7: Click to find out more. I was trying to put it all together and make it work, but after about hpy hours of fiddling I’ve determined either the mainboard or the CPU is faulty.
I’ve read about unlocking the CPU, but I haven’t read how to do this.

This is surely not a bad thing at all, but abt was worth noting in this review. I eventually got the board up and running and installed Windows using a spare Duron It detected it fine once the BIOS update was applied. I’ll agree that it could be the board or cpu.
Something others and I have found with the board though is that the system temperature probe is very inaccurate. I’m hovering back and forth between which I think is the culprit, so I want to get other opinions.
Not a major complaint, but something to watch out for when fitting the board. May 20, Posts: It will often read well above the reported CPU temperature – this is apparently because the sensor is right next to a bunch of capacitors near the CPU which get very hot, distorting the system temperature reading.
